Transport of Secondary Metabolites across Plant Membranes

Publication |
2016

Abstract

There are many various mechanisms within plant cell for an efficient transport of metabolic products from cytoplasm to vacuole. Harmful and toxic compounds are also removed in this way.

ABC (ATP-binding cassette) proteins use ATP to transport metabolites across the vacuolar membrane. MATE (Multidrug and toxic compound extrusion) proteins use a proton antiport.

The type of the transporter is affected by the membrane, the transported metabolite and the structure of the molecule, which can be acetylated or bounded with glutathione. A knowledge of the transport is important for the production and distribution of secondary metabolites in plants.
