Abstract
The paper focuses on the diachronic analysis of the pluperfect simple in the Portuguese language. The principal objective of this study is to analyze the modotemporal functions of the pluperfect simple in Old Portuguese, to compare its frequency and its use in the evolution of the Portuguese language and to detect in which period the pluperfect simple stopped being used in the modal functions.
