Onychomycosis

Publication at First Faculty of Medicine |
2016

Abstract

Onychomycosis is an infection of the nail apparatus by fungi that include dermatophytes, yeasts and nondermatophyte moulds. The toenails are affected in 80% of all cases of onychomycosis; dermatophyte infection, mostly due to Trichophyton rubrum, is the cause in over 90% of cases.

Terbinafine should be considered as first-line medication for dermatophyte onychomycosis, itraconazole being its best alternative.
