Sepsis represents a life-threatening condition characterized by dysregulated host response to infection. Various definitions and criteria for sepsis, severe sepsis, septic shock and organ dysfunction were used in the past, giving rise to contradictions in the results of the reported data regarding sepsis.
Recently, "The Third International Consensus Definitions for Sepsis and Septic Shock (Sepsis-3)" created by the task force of the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine was published in 2016.
