Abstract

The miners' strike of 1984-1985 is a political turning point in the history of post-war Britain. It began in March 1984 as a reaction to pit closures.

Well prepared Government refused to give in to the miners' pressure, which led to a record length strike. Thanks to Government preparedness and to tactical and strategic mistakes of the miners' leadership the strike failed.

This broke the power of the trade unions in Britain and the Conservative government was able to continue its reforms.
