Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2016

Abstract

The monograph offers a critical examination of the recently discovered archive of Jaroslav Kučera, a notable Czech cinematographer and a frequent collaborator of directors including Věra Chytilová, Vojtěch Jasný, Karel Kachyňa, Zdeněk Podskalský, Oldřich Lipský and Petr Weigl. In addition to general theoretical exploration of the cinematographer's work and basic media practices, the book analyzes specific approaches applied by Kučera.

The material also allows us to access Kučera's perspective and his way of thinking through images, and to investigate connections between his personal photography and home videos and his professional film career. At the same time, the book vividly outlines particular attributes of creative and mainstream filmmaking in socialist Czechoslovakia.
