Hearing impairment has an obvious influence on reading comprehension. This paper focuses on reading comprehension in students with cochlear implants.
In order to find out what's the situation concerning reading comprehension of students with cochlear implants in mainstream elementary schools and in schools for students with impaired hearing we used in our research study the non-verbal Kaufman subtest 16 from Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children K-ABC which is standardized for the population of students 7-12,5 years of age. Afterwards, we analyzed the results of measuring with this test.
The analysis showed that three quarters of students with cochlear implants demonstrate certain deficit in reading comprehension when compared with their hearing peers. These findings correspond to many foreign researches, which - furthermore - point out the growing difficulty of texts at secondary schools.
