Antiphona or Cantio? Searching the Identity of Central-European Spiritual Song

Publication at Faculty of Arts |

Abstract

The question in the title reflects some remarkable changes taking place in the liturgical chant repertoire during the fifteenth century. Cantiones find their way into Gregorian chants as tropes, but they can also replace traditional genres, as we observe in the case of the Marian antiphons at the end of the office.

What should we call chants composed for specific liturgical occasions if they use song-like structures? With numerous compositions belonging to different genres but sharing similar formal and melodic features, the question "Antiphon or Cantio?" has no clear answer unless we treat musical form and liturgical function separately.
