The paper presents an analysis of pre-service teachers' solutions of problems from synthetic geometry in which they were asked to use the basic knowledge of infinitesimal calculus. One of the most serious misconceptions uncovered when analysing these students' solutions was their misunderstanding of the concept of "to approach", which is confused with the property of being the nearest element, and also insufficient connection of the concepts of supremum and maximum and deficient ability to apply this relation.
