Opening the "black box": The Austrian-Czech Institutional Long Term Care Project

Abstract

There are very few studies in Europe providing solid basic data for care planning in institutional Long Term Care (iLTC). There is hardly any information on the prevalence of dementia in Austrian and Czech nursing homes.

Available international studies estimate that about 80% of persons living in iLTC have a form of dementia.(Vankova et al., 2008) It is further estimated that about 30% of affected individuals are not diagnosed (Lithgow et al., 2011) and consequently do not receive the social support, care and medical attention they need. (Holmerova, 2007; Vankova et al., 2008) Basic information on nutritional status, status of mobility and medication prescription patterns is missing. This information is necessary to stimulate the improvement of medical services in the future.
