Abstract

The chapter deals with the reading comprehension in children with autism spectrum disorders and summarizes results of the study which was carried out as a part of the project supported by Science Agency of the Czech Republic - Reading comprehension - a typical development and its risks, P407 / 13-20678S. Since it is not a very elaborated area in the Czech environment, we analysed international research results and these analysis set a theoretical background of the study where we examined the situation of children with autism spectrum disorder.

Children with autism spectrum disorder are often considered as individuals with a good decoding skills, but weak comprehension skills, which can result in their lower school performance. In the text, we present data and result from the project.

We compare them with outputs of international research studies, possible suggestions for educational practice are discussed.
