Transnational Crews and the Post-socialist Precarity: Globalizing Screen Media Labor in Prague

Publication at Faculty of Arts |

Abstract

This study revises theories of globalization of media production (mainly so-called NICL theory - new international division of cultural labor), and reveals significant segregation within the screen-media professional world in Czech Republic with regard to its individual sectors' capacity for knowledge transfer from foreign practices. It uses a method of collective ethnography (based on field reports from student interns in film crews, conducting participant observations within the framework of the project "FIND", headed by Petr Szczepanik in 2012-2014, see www.projectfind.cz) which was regarded as highly inspiring by international media scholars for its potential of connecting academic research, education, and industry practice (observed "from below", i.e. from the perspective of the lowest positions on the professional hierarchy).
