This paper deals with testing reading comprehension at the university level. A frequent argument: "students actually do not have to be able to speak; it is enough for them just to read something in a foreign language," may actually be very misleading.
What should students really be capable of? They should read and understand specialized text in a scientific discipline, be able to critically evaluate, explain, and then actively reformulate and apply it in their study, when preparing seminar and other types of works. This presentation discusses the topic of "readability" of texts that students actually used as part of their exam in English at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague.
This evaluation will be conducted with the help of the so-called Gunning Fog Index, which determines the level of "readability" and understanding English texts depending on the age of native English-speaking students, and attempts to compare the "readability" of these texts to the level achieved by the non-native students during the final exam in English at this faculty.
