Abstract

The chapter dedicated to Romanian literature represents the beginnings of its modern phase. The late 18th century saw the formation of the Transylvanian School under the influence of the enllightment and classicism in Transylvania (en emphasis on the Romanic roots of Transylvanian Romanians and the unity of the Romanian people).

Due to political changes in the early 19th century the Romanian language was promoted in education, theatre, press, social life and literature (the Vacarescu family of poets) in Wallachia and Moldova. Emancipation efforts came to climax in the fields of politics and culture in the revolutionary year of 1848, which also lent its name to the whole generation of forty-eight.

It comprised historicians, writers and the initiators of a wide range of genres in Romanian literature.
