Alongside the competency concept, the scientific literacy concept is a current issue of education policies of many European countries. These countries are currently facing the problem of integrating the scientific literacy into science education and linking it to education policies in force.
The paper presents a proposal for a developmental concept of scientific literacy, discussing the desirable characteristics of the concept as well as its possible content applied in the Czech Republic. The proposal for the developmental concept of scientific literacy is based on a detailed analysis of almost a score of the most prominent studies, made by experts in the area of science education over a period of more than five decades.
Authors believe that this analytical study may bring a new insight into the issue at hand and help didactic theoreticians on natural sciences in those countries that wish to advance the scientific literacy at the national level to guide their considerations of it.
