The fragment known as "VienD" comprises two leaves of mid-fifteenth-century polyphony that until recently served as pastedowns to a theological manuscript in the Diözesanarchiv in Vienna. Removal of these leaves from the host manuscript reveals two more pages of music (in addition to the two already known), confirming the use of partbook format and bringing the number of compositions to six.
This study, the first of the fragment as a whole, examines VienD as a physical object, analyses its contents and considers its possible origin and function.
