This work deals with the voltammetric study of o-cresol using a boron-doped diamond electrode. An irreversible oxidation peak was observed at +1.06 V vs Ag/AgCl/ 3 mol l-1 KCl in Britton - Robbinson buffer solution (pH 2.0).

Fouling of electrode surface due to the formation of reaction by products can be prevented in-situ using anodic activation at +2.4 V between individual scans. Optimization of instrumental parameters for pulse voltammetric methods resulted in limits of detection of ca 3.10-6 mol l-1.

Boron-doped diamond electrode employed in wall-jet amperometric detector in high-performance liquid chromatography further succeeded in detection of cresols and other phenols with satisfactory repeatability, which confirms applicability of this electrode material in analysis of phenolic compounds frequently causing electrode surface passivation.
