Middle ages as inspiration for the Prague metro

Abstract

In my paper I consider the artistic design of the Prague metro stations. In their decoration the historical themes of the Hussite movement and the flowering of the Czech lands in the 14th and 15th centuries were reinterpreted for the purposes of the ideological art of the socialist régime.

In line with this theme I focuson the stations Karlovo náměstí, Jiřího z Poděbrad and v%Zelivského, where the decoration relates to the adherents of the Calixtines and the ruler from the luxembourg dynatsy. The juxtaposition of these figures with scenes of socialist realism from that time suggest a parallel between the Hussite revolution and the struggle of working class, or between the endeavours of Charles IV to build up the Bohemian state and the rise of Czechoslovak Socialist republic in the second half of the 20th century.

The source materiál for this paper is the instructional document from the period Report on the Ideological Focus of Works of Art and Names of Stations.
