Abstract

Watermelon grows wild in much of the tropical and subtropical Africa. In the desert and semi-desert areas it is demonstrably used by hunter and gatherers since prehistoric times.

Evidence for the intentional cultivation we have since the end of the 3rd millennium BC. Later on, it began to spread to Europe and other parts of the world.
