The Institution of the Eucharist as a Renewal of the Davidic Kingdom in the Lucan Work

Abstract

The text demonstrates that the institution of the Eucharist by Jesus at the Last Supper is not only linked with the Jewish rite of the Paschal meal, but it was understood by Jesus himself as a renewal of the Davidic kindgom. This aspect is underlined especially in the Lucan work, i. e. in the Third Gospel and in the Acts of the Apostles.

This Lucan theological prospective of the Jesus Paschal mystery corresponds to many Messianic ideas and expectations attested in the literature of the Second Temple period. Since this renewal is related to the concept "New Covenant", it can not be understood as a mere restauration of the former models of the Kingdom, but on the other hand it should be interpreted in a clear continuity with them.
