Abstract
The primary aim of the present paper was to assess how much is this extension of contraindication of codeine use to adults substantiated by published reports. The secondary aim was to find reports on respiratory depression after dihydrocodeine.
Conclusions: The extension of contraindication of codeine use to adults because of increased risk of respiratory depression in CYP2D6 ultrarapid metabolizers is not substantiated by the current publications available in PubMed or Web of Science (with the exception of breastfeeding mothers). In contrast, there is a good evidence for increased risk of respiratory depression after codeine in children CYP2D6 ultrarapid metabolizers.
No evidence was found for respiratory depression after dihydrocodeine.
