Can constructional profiles reveal the recipe for Dutch 'happiness'?

Abstract

Metaphorical expressions result from general mappings between a concrete source domain and an abstract target domain. More specifically, the emotional domains are considered to be connected with the CONTAINER metaphor.

This work aims to provide a pilot test of the metaphorical background of emotional words in Dutch while examining the meaning of near-synonyms of Dutch words for 'happiness'. I am using an approach based on the frequency distribution of the constructions where the researched words can be found, the so called 'constructional profiles'.

Thus, this work offers a possible quantitative insight in metaphorical research on near-synonymy.
