Abstract

The publication presents the results of research that verified the validity of some foreign criminological theories in the Czech context. These theories are devoted to the nature of the links between environment, victimization and fear of crime.

A questionnaire survey was conducted in eight model localities, representing different types of settlements in the Czech Republic. It focused on three basic socio-psychological characteristics of the sites - degree of social disorganization, informal control level and nature of neighborliness.

The study focused on investigate the feeling of safety and fear of crime, depending on the abovementioned physical and social characteristics of the site, victimization rate, recorded crime and individual factors - such as feeling of happiness or relationships with other people. It turned out that the fear of crime is determined also by other factors than urban form and crime level in locality.

In contrast, fear of crime is not significantly affected by the unemployment rate or the number of households receiving social allowances.
