Malaria is an infectious disease of humans caused by microorganisms belonging to the genus Plasmodium that is commonly transmitted by an infected female Anopheles mosquito. It is discussed from the point of view of its occurrence, transfer, the ways of its treatment by antimalarial medications including quinine and range of synthetic antimalarial drugs.
Treatment containing an artemisinin and its semi-synthetic derivatives (artemisinin-combination therapies, ACTs) - now standard treatment worldwide for Plasmodium falciparum malaria is described, too.
