Abstract
Twenty two essays based on the background of a specific genre of painting in the 17th century. In the middle of reflections the lemon, one of the most distinguished and often repeated parts of the Netherlands' still lifes.
In wide or close context the texts touch the interpretation of a painting. In the framework of this interpretation, the philosophy, religion, literature but also food and drink habitual practices or the technology of the construction of a painting in the Netherlands in 17th century are reflected.
A lemon can be seen as a mental parallel, an iconographic or emblematic symbol or as a self-evident part of the pomology and recipes of the era.
