NEONATOLOGISTS' VIEW OF PROBLEMATIC AREAS OF HEALTH LITERACY OF MOTHERS WITH PREMATURE INFANT

Abstract

15 million babies are born preterm. For mothers of premature infants (PI) is important health literacy, which can be defined as the ability to read, understand, appraise and apply health information in relation to health.

Mothers require sufficient level of knowledge about the development and behavior of PI to make responsible decisions. The aim of this paper is to show view of neonatologists on the most problematic areas of health literacy of mothers of PI.

The results are a part of the output of research focused on the health literacy of mothers of PI. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and, analyzed using cluster analysis.

Participants were neonatologists, selected based on the length of their experience. The most problematic areas of health literacy of mothers of PI: lack of knowledge and information about premature birth, PI, health status of the PI.

These problems increase the stress, the ability to communicate with physicians and be their partner in the care. Many researches are focused mainly on psychological intervention.

However, the results point that mothers of PI need education in areas of health literacy, including practical skills. Wide spectrum of needs of mothers of PI could provide multidisciplinary team.
