Abstrakt
The paper discussed the third and last novel by the Scottish Gaelic novelist Tormod Caimbeul (Norman Campbell) - "An Druim bho Thuath" (The Northern Ridge 2011). Although Caimbeul is recognised by a number of important critics in the field as one of the best Gaelic novelists of the twentieth century, very little criticism has been devoted to his works so far and his oeuvre remains completely untranslated.
His last novel is the least researched one. The paper introduced Caimbeul's writing in general and the existing critical reception and then discussed "An Druim bho Thuath" in terms of subject matter, style, and form - the novel draws both on the Gaelic tradition and on European modernism and postmodernism, and mixes Gaelic and English.
The paper was accompanied by original translations of extracts from the Gaelic original into English.
