Surgical treatment of ischemic heart disease is based on bypassing the significantly stenosed parts of coronary arteries with grafts. The assessment of the method of treatment should by made by an experienced heart team according to the up-to-date guidelines.
The highest advantage of the surgical treatment is its long-lasting effect, especially if arterial grafts are used (mammary artery, radial artery). The disadvantage is related to surgical trauma, therefore more gentle procedures are used such as off-pump or miniinvasive access, especially in high-risk patients (age, polymorbidity).
Surgical methods are irrepaceable in handling myocardial infarction complications (VSD, mitral valve papillary muscle rupture).
