Was Eugen, Count of Czernin (1796-1868) a Reform Catholic? His Theological Ideas and Considerations About the State-Church Relation

Abstract

The analysis of the diaries and theoretical works of the nobleman Eugen, Count Czernin aims at defining his position in the Pre-March theological discourse in Bohemia and reconstructing his critical opinions about the restoration of exclusive relations between the Holy See and the Habsburg Monarchy since the 1820's. Though his critics on the predominant positions of the Catholic hierarchy in the state has weakend during the Revolution of 1848, his difficulties with the Roman-Catholic Church manifest the necessity of reconsideration the creation of modern Conservativism in the Danube Monarchy.
