Basque national movement reflected by improvised poetry

Publication at Faculty of Humanities |

Abstract

Basque national movement reflected by improvised poetry. The paper aims to show the connection between two phenomena: improvised poetry in Basque language called bertsolaritza and the evolution and contemporary situation of the Basque national movement and especially its radical-leftist stream called "Izquierda Abertzale", a movement historically closely related (but not equivalent to) the armed organization of ETA.

The paper will provide a brief description of both phenomena and an analysis of the recent political evolution reflected in contemporary improvised poetry, concretely during the last championship held in 2013. The research connects political anthropology, anthropology of art and theory of ethnicity and nationalism.
