Abstract

A lecture about the various use of science in the gothic horror genre. It elaborated on the topic of rationalism in the original gothic novels, the motif of a mad scientist, the mechanical torture chambers in the novels of E.

A. Poe and G.

Leroux, technological devices in B. Stoker's Dracula or phantasmagorias.

The lecture focused on the employment of these motifs in cinema.
