The paper presents, on basis of specific case studies, various approaches to old and new by German-speaking architects in the 1920s and 1930s. Attention is devoted to the reception of traditional architectural elements and their adaptation.
The extent to which traditional and modern approaches to architecture are linked is examined, using as examples buidings designed by the architects Rudolf Hildebrand, Adolf Foehr, Ernst Mühlstein, Victor Fürth and Otto and Karl Kohn. The approach to the lagacy of the architectural tradition is discussed as one of the criteria for evaluating the specific character of German architecture in Prague.
