Abstract

Demographic aging is a discussed issue in contemporary society. One of its negative consequences will be the increasing costs of health and social care and family care demands.

The poster is focused on the issue of institutional elderly care in Czechia, specifically elderly care homes, which are the most used service on this count. In 2017 the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs of the Czech Republic (MoLSA CR) registered a total of 526 elderly care homes.

Their capacities are currently insufficient and the administrators of these facilities do not consider increasing capacity in the future. According to data of the Czech Statistical Office, the use of the capacity of elderly care homes is between 96-98% in the last ten years.

The number of unsuccessful applicants increases every year; according to the data of MoLSA CR at the end of 2015 there were registered 64.1 thousand unsuccessful applicants. The aim of the contribution is to observe the situation and outline the main problems.

By calculating of forecast models the paper is going to discuss possible options of increasing the capacity of institutional facilities for elderly people. Using the population forecast of Czech Statistical Office from 2013, if the proportion of people aged 65 and over in the population residing in care homes remains at the same level, it will be necessary to increase capacity by around more than 70% by 2030.
