A transition towards childbearing at later ages represents one of the most striking features of demographic change over the last two decades in the Czech Republic. Postponement transition commences with an increase in the age of the mother at first birth and usually results in a decline in TFR due to the tempo effect.
The aim of the paper is to analyse the causes and consequences of fertility postponement. We focus on ideal and planned age of childbearing and on the reasons that are associated with the fact that women fail to fulfill their plan and postpone the realization of childbearing much longer than originally planned.
We use survey data Women 2016 (Ženy 2016) and analyse the sample of 1257 women born between 1966-1990. Analyses reveal different factors of childbearing postponement between population groups categorized by birth generation, education, and others.
This paper shows main causes of the postponement and how they differ in specified population's groups (e.g. by birth generation, ideal and planed age of childbearing, education, region, length of the postponement). Simultaneously the paper focuses on changes of declared importance of these factors.
