Evidence-based treatment of tobacco dependence includes psychobehavioural intervention and pharmacotherapy - locally available varenicline and bupropion, both on prescription, and/or nicotine replacement therapy over-the-counter in pharmacy. It has been shown that none of these first-line drugs cause increased occurrence of neuropsychiatric or other adverse effects, even among smokers with psychiatric comorbidities.
Pharmacotherapy is not reimbursed, but some health insurance companies partly cover the cost with prevention funds; see current conditions on the website of the Society for Treatment of Tobacco Dependence www.slzt.cz as well as contacts for treatment options. A brief intervention ranging from a few dozen of seconds to 10 minutes should be provided by every healthcare professional, intensive treatment should be available to those who need it.
It is one of the most cost-effective medical interventions.
