Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a generic term for a group of diseases whose common feature is chronic hyperglycemia due to insulin secretion disorder, insufficient insulin effect, or both. The global prevalence of diabetes is steeply rising, diabetes is also one of the leading causes of kidney failure.
Patients with DM thus represent a significant proportion of nephrology clients. The role of nephrologist is important in patients with DM and lies primarily in the treatment of renal complications of DM, differential diagnosis of kidney impairment and selection of appropriate medication according to renal function.
