In this contribution, word problems are characterized as problems that include some context (real, real-like or imaginary) within which some numerical data are given and a question (questions) is posed for pupils to solve using their mathematical knowledge and out-of-school experience, Some of parameters which might influence the difficulty of word problems are presented. This information has important implications for teaching and test makers.
