During the natural course, most patients with carotid dissection will spontaneously recover on average after 3 months. Therefore, the primary goal of treatment in the acute phase is to prevent further ischemic cerebrovascular events (transient ischemic attacks).
Antiplatelet therapy is similarly effective as antiocoagulation therapy in the prevention of stroke and death in patients with cervical artery dissection and should be preferred in most patients due to its safety.
