Abstrakt
The study describes the attempts to establish Bavaria as a modern independent nation. King Ludwig I., an enthusiastic Hellenophile, wanted to construct Bavarian identity from the inspiration of Greek antiquity: to turn Munich into an "Athens on the Isar" and to make Bavaria a crystallisation point for an "alternative" German unity.
