The book deals with the problem whether (and why) mathematics is a science. Nowadays almost nobody doubts that mathamtics is a "queen of sciences" since this discipline is vehemently used in all natural sciences and it has a great impact on modern technologies and devices as well.
However, mathematics was not always considered to be a queen of sciences. In antiquity and in medieval times it was subordinated to metaphysics or to theology and was also considered to rather an art than a real science.
In our book we show (from a historical point of view) how the concept of mathematics and its scientific status changed from antiquity to the present time.
