This contribution deals with problems connected with the teaching of history. It is based on broad empirical research developed in recent years in the Czech Republic using both quantitative and qualitative methodologies.
The content is oriented on the basic questions of: A) What is the importance attributed to knowledge and teaching of history? B) From what sources do people derive knowledge of history and what role does the teaching of history play in it? C) What are the main problems of history teaching from the viewpoint of its practitioners? This article tries to identify strengths and weaknesses in contemporary history education on basis of the example of the Czech Republic.
