Abstract
The review deals with Josef Švéda's book Země zaslíbená, země zlořečená. Obrazy Ameriky v české literatuře a kultuře [Promised Land, Accursed Land.
Images of America in Czech Literature and Culture]. It examines the text in context of imagology and tries to demonstrate how Švéda's book fulfills the aims of this discipline, but it is also limited by it.
It pays attention to the ways Švéda's text complements the research that has been done on the topic of literary encounters with America so far and it attempts to elucidate the possible use of the materials Švéda presents for the future scholars.
