Mathematical word problems as a type of communication

Publication at Faculty of Education |

Abstract

The article deals with preliminary results of linguistic analysis oriented at wording of mathematical contextual/word problems both in Czech textbooks and in international testing materials. As a major feature of such texts, a high level of stereotypy in formulations as well as a prevailing mechanical problem-wording was found.

As a result, mathematical word problems often appear either semantically underdetermined, or overloaded, therefore requiring additional steps of re-interpretation.
