Peonies (Paeonia L.) are not only ornamental flowers, but they also have many medicinal properties. Some species of peonies are used in traditional Chinese medicine, especially Paeonia lactiflora.
A decoction of its root is used to treat painful or inflammatory disorders for thousands of years. Phytochemical studies indicate that peonies contain many valuable secondary metabolites, such as monoterpene glycosides and phenols.
The results of pharmacological research suggest that peonies have a wide range of activities such as anti-inflam-matory, antioxidant, anti-tumor, antidiabetic, cardiovascular, hepatoprotective and neuroprotective effects. This review synopsizes updated information concerning the phytochemistry and pharmacology of Paeonia spp.
