Abstract

Gynostemma pentaphyllum is a perennial herb originating from Southeast Asia where it is known as jiaogulan. Many bioactivecompounds were isolated from aerial parts of this plant; the main pharmacologically active components of jiaogulan are thegypenosides, which are dammarane-type triterpene saponins.

Recent studies confirm numerous pharmacological effects ofjiaogulan, the most promising is its antidiabetic, anti-cancer and neuroprotective activity.
