Publication at Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové |
2017

Abstract

Osteoporosis in men is often neglected and considered as a rare disease with low prevalence. National representatives of the countries, located in central and east part of the jEurope reflected the questionnaire about diagnostics and therapy of osteoporosis of men.

Nine countries were involved. Men represent 5 - 10% of the DXA referrals, mostly after the low-energy fractures.

Only one third of men visiting DXA sites are expected to have normal bone mineral density. Diagnostic criteria are the same as for women as well as the treatment modalities.

Osteoporosis in men is an under-recognized problem in the central Europe, with tremendous gaps in the diagnosis and treatment.
