A polymeric thermoplastic biodegradable composition for the manufacture of inserts for the treatment and prevention of local infections and a method of its preparation
Abstract
The solution submitted provides a polymeric thermoplastic biodegradable composition having with an antibiotic for the manufacture of inserts for the treatment and prevention of local infections, which comprises (a) a plasticized polysaccharide component which is a starch or a mixture of starch and maltodextrin or an esterified starch or a mixture of esterified starch and esterified maltodextrin, wherein the maltodextrin is a mixture of oligosaccharides with a dextrose equivalent of at most 25, wherein the polysaccharide component further comprises an antibiotic; and (b) a polyester component which is poly-ε-caprolactone and/or poly[ε-caprolactam)-co-(ε-caprolactone)] with a crystalline phase content of at least 10% and a crystalline phase melting point of less than 65°C in a weight ratio of (a):(b) equalling 4:1 to 1:9.
