The aim of the article is a critical evaluation of the development of the origin myth in the First and Second Bulgarian state on the basis of contemporary sources. There is still strongly rooted concept of strong and undying historical memory of Bulgarians to the national state in Bulgarian historiography, whose restoration was to be their collective goal.
Our aim therefore will be the myth of origin as we try to point out the problematic nature of such ideas. The result should capture the myth of origin in medieval Bulgaria as a dynamically evolving phenomenon whose appearance largely contradicts the expectations of Bulgarian historians of medieval Bulgarian nation and its strong link to national statehood.
