Abstract

In 1568, famous venetian music printer Antonio Gardano (1509-1569) published vast anthology of motets divided into five volumes. It was edited by Vienna-based Italian businessman Pietro Giovannelli (cca 1530 - cca 1583).

The collection comprising 254 motets of 31 composers was dedicated to the Roman Emperor and Bohemian King Maximilian II (1527-1576) and to his two younger brothers - the Archduke Ferdinand II of Austria (1529-1595) and Carl of Styria (1540-1590).
