The chapter deals with the question of whether royal gifts to the Church in the Middle Ages were primarily led by pragmatism or pious motives. The analysis deals with the personality of king John of Luxembourg (Bohemia) and his family members.

The chapter provides an overview of royal donations and proposes the categorization of these donations. The chapter describes their changing motivation.
